  2. The footsteps are the people who won't go away until they get what they want, and once they get it, they can't change back. In the chapter Echoing Footsteps, the sounds of footsteps get closer and closer, never going away, always seeming to be there. "Headlong, mad, and dangerous footsteps to force their way into anybody's life, footsteps not easily made clean again if once stained red, and footsteps raging in Saint Antoine afar off..." (pg. 222)This quote shows that the people are willing to whatever it takes "to force their way into anybody's life," and won't easily change back.

  3. The footsteps belong to Madame Defarge. She leads her mob of women, her husband, and fate. “The loud echoing footsteps of Saint Antoine escort through the Paris streets in mid- July. They are headlong, mad and dangerous; and in years so long after the breaking of the cask at Defarge’s wine- shop door, they are not easily purified when once stained red,” (Dickens 20, 230). The footsteps “escort through the Pairs streets” just as Madame Defarge escorts the governor to his death; just as they are “mad and dangerous,” except that Madame Defarge knows exactly where they are headed.
